SHU women fall in double OT

FAIRFIELD — Ashunae Durant and Aleana Leon each posted a double-double to lead Hofstra over Sacred Heart 86-81 in double overtime in a non-league women’s basketball game Thursday night at the Pitt Center.

The Pioneers (2-3) trailed 61-53 with 4:03 left in regulation, but rallied to tie the game at 61-61 on a layup by Katherine Haines with 1:53 remaining. The Pride (3-3) reclaimed the lead on a Durant layup 24 seconds later, but Sacred Heart responded with Candice Leatherwood’s jumper at the 1:10 mark to send the game into overtime.

In the second overtime, Durant scored five of Hofstra’s six points in the game’s final 1:01 to break an 80-80 tie and secure the win for the Pride.

Breaking down the CIAC football semifinals

One playoff round is down, two remain.

The CIAC football semifinals will take place Sunday at the sites of the higher seeds at 12:30 p.m. The finals — Classes LL, L, M and S — will be held one week from Saturday at sites and times to be announced.

Before the next round of games kick off, let’s take a look at what we’ve learned so far and what we can expect to see moving forward.

WHAT WE LEARNED

1 THE RAMS ARE WHO WE THOUGHT THEY WERE: Put yourself in Middletown’s shoes for a moment. You’re 10-0 and have climbed to No. 3 in the state poll after completing your first unbeaten regular season since 1985. You’ve just beaten Windsor to lock up the top seed in the upcoming Class L playoffs.

Lafranchise earns his way up ladder with Sound Tigers

BRIDGEPORT — Defenseman Kane Lafranchise started in the ECHL with coach Brent Thompson about as far from here as you can get in North American pro hockey.

They briefly reunited in Bridgeport in 2015 training camp before Lafranchise went back to the ECHL. Lafranchise rose to the AHL later that year, stuck around, and earned a chance to take that last step in his career, getting an NHL contract with the New York Islanders this summer.

“It’s obviously huge. It’s something I’m not going to forget,” Lafranchise said. “It’s fun to look back from where I started to where I am now, all the hard work that got me here.

“I know there are expectations that come with it.

Two cheap lift tickets to kick off your ski season

Here’s a wonderful way to kick off your ski and snowboard season on a sweet note: Cheap, very cheap, lift tickets.

With single-day, walk-up window lift tickets costing more than $100 this season, snaring these deals is better than ever.

There’s two ticket deals on the horizon that are simply too good to pass up.

The cheap tickets are being offered at Okemo and Mount Snow in Vermont on specific days.

They come at a time when ski resorts are not crowded and when areas are aggressively expanding terrain with snowmaking, whenever cold temperatures allow.

This weekend, Mount Snow and Okemo are both expected to offer more than 25 open trails.
