Consistency helps Sound Tigers to third straight win, over Binghamton

BRIDGEPORT — If the end of the calendar year inspires a look back, Saturday’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers win kind of inspired thoughts of the even-further past. More like the days when Webster Bank Arena was the Arena at Harbor Yard.

Bridgeport continued its stellar work on the penalty kill, held Binghamton to 19 shots, and got 19 saves from Christopher Gibson in a 5-0 win over the Devils.

“What I like is the consistency,” Bridgeport coach Brent Thompson said after his team’s third straight win, a streak over which the Sound Tigers and Gibson have allowed only two total goals to Hartford, Hershey and Binghamton.

“The work ethic has been good over the last little while. The focus has been consistency.

Girls hockey: Greenwich routs Amity/North Haven/Cheshire

GREENWICH — Saturday’s Winter Classic matchup between the Greenwich High School and Amity/North Haven/Cheshire girls ice hockey teams began one hour later than it was scheduled to start due to traffic on the always crowded I-95. Yet waiting around for their opponents to arrive on a snowy Saturday afternoon didn’t prevent the Cardinals from soaring to a strong start.

Jennifer Kelly made sure of that.

A junior forward, Kelly scored five goals, four of which came during the first period, to power Greenwich to an impressive 6-1 win over Amity/North Haven/Cheshire in a game played outside during a steady snowfall at frigid Greenwich Skating Club.
